Here are some fun facts you can use to impress people at parties:
- Manhattan Beach’s 928-foot-long pier is the oldest standing cement pier on the West Coast. In 1991, it was restored to its ‘20s appearance when the now trademark roundhouse was first installed at the end. It was from this pier in 1929 that a fisherman caught a record-breaking 600-pound sea bass.
- MB is the site of the annual AVP tournament, AKA the “Wimbledon of Beach Volleyball,” which usually occurs in August. Contest champs get a plaque on the aforementioned pier.

- Ever walked on Waikiki Beach and experienced déjà vu? It may be because MB and WB share the same sand. In the early1920s, a local construction company struck a deal with Hawaiian businessmen in need of massive amounts of white sand to cover the rock beaches of Honolulu in order to lure tourists to paradise. With the boom in development, there was surplus sand from dunes, construction, and excavation.
- Metlox Pottery made its home in MB from 1927 to 1988 where today’s Metlox Plaza stands. It started as a maker of outdoor ceramic signs before turning to art and dinnerware, noted for its bright color glazes which were derived from locally mined metallic oxides. Mint originals are in high demand at auctions and on eBay.
